Charise Johnson

Charise is an innovation manager working across GDI Hub's Centre for Digital Language Inclusion and Accelerate programmes. Her work is focused on strengthening community engagement among GDI Hub's innovators, mentors, partners and wider stakeholders, and advancing GDI Hub’s policy agenda through research‑driven portfolio development.

Charise brings over a decade of interdisciplinary expertise in science communication, digital technology policy, and environmental justice to her work on science and society issues. She comes to GDI Hub from the Royal Society, the UK's national academy of science, where she worked on data and digital assistive technology policy. She has previously held policy roles at Julie's Bicycle, mobilising the arts and culture sector around climate change, and the British Academy, advising the government on Covid-19 during lockdown. She also worked as a research analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientists in Washington DC, focusing on regulatory science integrity, environmental policy, and community partnership-building.

With a background in Psychology and an MS in Environmental Science, Charise approaches complex issues with compassion, creativity, and collaboration to ensure that solutions benefit - rather than harm - marginalised communities.
